Horizon College International celebrates six glorious years of service in the field of education in Sri Lanka having commenced her iconic voyage in September 2009. With humble beginnings of 120 students on roll and a staff of 20 six years ago, today the number on roll has increased to 1400 students and 209 staff members, in addition to a branch school- a remarkable feat indeed. This growth personifies the quality and stature of the school.
The Founder and Chairman of Horizon College International Mr Upul Daranagama with his expertise in the field of education had a vision of creating a school on par with international standards, providing a total solution for education including higher education to the children of Sri Lanka. His dream and vision has come true as Horizon College International ensconced in the salubrious climes of Malabe with its purpose built edifice offers a multitude of facilities including labs, libraries and facilities for sports including a swimming pool, Basketball court, and play ground for athletics and cricket. The Principal Mrs Maryanne Hills with her vast foreign and local experience as an educationist steers the ship of HCI with much aplomb and she is assisted by a dynamic set of Senior management staff and Sectional Heads. The competent academic staff efficiently delivers the English National curriculum and the students are groomed with utmost care from Play school age group to take up the Edexcel International GCSE (London) O/L and AL examination. To this end HCI consists of Elementary, Primary and Secondary school.
HCI is proud to announce its academic achievements at the recent Edexcel International GCSE O/L May 2015 Examination where the Horizonites achieved a total of 24A*’s, 34A’s, 37B’s and 34C’s with a 100% pass rate across all the subjects similar to the 2014 results. At the 2015 Edexcel Primary and Lower Secondary curriculum examinations Horizonites achieved 100% pass rate in Science and Maths and has bettered the 2014 results.
The Horizonites have proved their prowess in aesthetics by being placed first in the island in Speech, Recitation competitions. For the 2nd consecutive year HCI produced the highest number of Gold medalists (201) from the Colombo District at the Sri Lanka Festival of Performing Arts organized by Institute of Music, Speech and Speaking Skills. In the field of ICT, Horizonites have once again made their mark by winning the silver medal (Senior category) and bronze medal (Junior category) competitions conducted by the Ministry of Education and Sri Lanka Computer Society. Horizonites have further evinced their talent in oratory competitions including the Future Minds Expo 2015 where the Head Prefect of HCI, Supuni Bandara brought honour to HCI by emerging 2nd at the All Island Public speaking competition beating nearly 140 students from leading schools in the island. HCI produced winners at the Learnium International School public speaking competition and IPO Lanka Science Olympiad in 2015. The Horizonite cricketers have made their mark by being selected to the Junior Colombo North District squad. The HCI athletes have proved to be winners at the Zonal meet and at the John Tarbet Junior Athletic meet the young Horizonites have brought glory to their alma mater. This amply justifies the balanced education HCI provides her students.
The grand Annual Graduation ceremony for Year 1 students, annual Awards Day rewarding the crème of HCI, colourful concert, enthralling English Day, religious programmes for Vesak & Poson pageant, traditional Avrudu celebrations, Christmas party, Children’s Day, Science camp, Summer camp are some of the calendar events of the school. The vibrant Interact Club, English Literary Union, Science Club, ICT club, Photography club activities, Sports day, Inter House Table tennis, Basketball, Netball, Inter school Basketball Tournament and the most anticipated cricket fiesta ensures that the students have a pleasurable experience while learning.
The Horizon Campus also located in Malabe, complements the school, where the students graduating from A/L can move up to tertiary education with ease and comfort. The Horizon Campus offers numerous courses on Law, Education, Psychology, Bio chemistry etc leading to BA degree, Bsc and even Masters, and offers these programmes in collaboration with top foreign universities in UK, USA, Malaysia and India. In 2014 the Horizon Campus obtained Sri Lankan government approval and University Grants Commission approval as a degree awarding institution in Sri Lanka. In 2015 October Horizon Campus will be the first Sri Lankan private university to be listed in the Commonwealth top Universities list, which is a remarkable achievement for Horizon Campus.
