The Battle of the Gods in the salubrious climes of Malabe

In the lush green salubrious climes of Malabe, Horizon College International held its Athletic Meet on 23rd  October 2015, where the children of Houses named after Gods- Apollo, Hermes, Zeus and Athena, battled it out in order to win the coveted trophies. It was a day of fun, thrills and excitement for students, staff and the parents of the school. The athletic meet was declared open by the Principal of HCI, Mrs Maryanne Hills. Among the distinguished guests were the Chairman of HCI Mr Upul Daranagama and the Director Mrs Priya Daranagama. The track events for boys and girls  Under 8, 10,14, 16 and over 16 were held in full gusto. The colourful and spectacular drill display by the Year 4 and 5 students of Malabe HCI and the Branch school in Nugegoda, enthralled the spectators. The Chief Guest for the event Mrs L Victoria, President, Asian Netball Federation, was welcomed by the school’s top management and conducted to the venue by the smart Oriental Band of Horizon College.

There was a flurry of excitement when the teachers’ race began and the thrills continued with the mothers’ race and the fathers’ race as the children cheered on their parents. The Nugegoda Branch school’s dancing troupe performed a very entertaining dance, bringing in a change from the sporting activities. The boys and girls relays, the invited school’s relay too drew much attention of the spectators. Lyceum International , Panadura emerged first in the invited schools relay.

The Chief Guest, Mrs. L Victoria addressing the gathering expressed her pleasure for being given the opportunity to witness the sporting talents of Horizonites and was amazed by the fact that a school of such high caliber as HCI could be found in the outskirts of Colombo. The smart marching squads of the four Houses paraded by leading the way to the moment everyone had been eagerly waiting for- the awards ceremony. Best Male Athlete of the Meet         was     Ravindu Sonal of Hermes House and Best Female Athlete of the Meet was Samidi Amarasinghe of Athena House. Apollo House was declared winners with 846 points; the Runner  Up was Hermes House with 599 points.  The other two Houses of Gods, Athena and sulking Zeus, threatened to bring the sky down, metaphorically speaking of course, however literally the rain God decided to bring in the lightening and shower of rain but not before the Athletic meet of HCI came to a successful close. This event was successfully organized thanks to the staff and organizing committee led by the Head of Sports Mrs Shyama Cooray and Event Coordinator of HCI- Mrs Lali Gunasekera
