Annual and special Events at a glance
- Founder’s Day: Prefects Guild take an active part in Organizing the Founder’s Day where usually an under privileged school is provided with items to support the students in their education.
In the recent past both students from Thalahena Vidyalaya and Sri Yashodara Maha Vidyalaya Malabe were supported. Items donated in the past included, school bags, School shoes, stationary.
- Christmas celebrations: Prefects are actively involved in organizing and decorations in each Christmas. They support other clubs and societies in organizing their fundraisers. Last Christmas over 200 Christmas hats were made by the prefects.
- Awards Day, Independence Day, Teachers Day, The World’s Children’s Day and other events of the school: A vital task is carried out by the prefects in supporting the school management during main calendar events of the school. This year there was a new addition to the list, when we took part in the ISAC meet. Our Prefects were on duty on both days during the ISAC meet.
In celebrating teachers’ day this year, the prefects made a special badge to be pinned on all the teachers in school which was highly appreciated by all the teachers.
- Community projects: Every year the prefects are actively engage in various Community Projects and this year they formed a Community Project board to specially focus in this area .Under “Anagathaya 2020”(Future 2020) few projects were carried out during the first six months of the academic Year 2019/2020.These projects include:
- Orphanage Project: Prefects visited an orphanage maintained under the Suchorithodaya Samaja Seva Sangamaya and spent the evening with the children there. The Guild also carried out a donation drive in order to donate essential items to the orphanage.
- Sea Turtle Tank Project: The guild constructed a sea turtle tank in the sea turtle conservation center in Mount Lavinia which was heavily underfunded. We also provided monetary donations towards the improvements of the turtle’s welfare.
- Break the Mould : The Prefects Guild organized an online webinar based on three main topics .
- Relationship education
- Gender Equality issues in Sri Lanka
- Breaking the sex taboo in Sri Lanka
- Joint Project with the Interact Club of HCI: The prefects’ Guild collaborated with the Interact Club of HCI for a project involving the painting of the underprivileged St Mary’s School Weliwitta.
- Wilpattu Plantation Project
Senior Prefects joined hand with the SriLankan Army to plant 200 trees in Wilpattu (Surrounding area of the Wilpattu National Park) to reduce global warming and to aid the Sri Lankan Government and the Army in their reforestation program.
- The Prefects’ Guild visited the Shantha Sevana Cancer Hospice in Maharagama and donated some medical equipments requested by the management there.
Shantha Sevana is a non-profit private organization that cares for terminal cancer patients that have been sent from the Apeksha Cancer Hospital.
- The Prefects’ Guild 2019/20 bid farewell to its outgoing Senior Prefects in year 13, with a small felicitation ceremony.
- The Prefects of year 10, 11 and 13 participated in a webinar conducted by past Horizonite Ishini Kuruppu
The webinar was focused on the topic of “Starting your own business and being a young entrepreneur”
- The Senior Prefects of Year 13 held a leadership workshop on MS Teams for the Prefects of year 12, 11 and 10. They discussed a variety of topics ranging from teamwork to exam phobia!
- The Prefects’ Guild 2019/20 has partnered with the LFRO to celebrate Christmas this year by donating books to a rural school in Puttalam and helping them build a library. To collect books a book drive is being conducted currently with the deadline set as 20th Dec.
Upcoming community Projects:
- Water project
This project will be targeted at a rural area with lack of drinking water with the aim of providing them clean water.
- Weekly Prefects Meetings: once a fortnight Prefects meeting are conducted with the participation of the Principal and the teachers in charge of the Guild. This provides a platform for the prefects to engage in public speaking and show their talents in Art and Music.
During lock down, prefects recorded their speeches and posted on the prefects’ group. - International Student forum: This has become an annual event in the prefect calendar. Ten students attend this International forum each year.
- Projects during lockdown: our prefects were quite active even during the last few months when the whole world was slowing down. They were quite engaged and made full use of the new technology. The prefects Guild took the initiative of opening a Social media page for the Guild. Also, we created our own email account for official communication. These are password protected with only access to the Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers In charge and the head Prefects.
- Chronicles of earthlings – A collection of students own literary work.

- National Heroes’ Day -A poster was made which carried the message –“The heroes of our nation make tomorrow for us; their sacrifice forms the air we breathe. We salute you”
- Mothers’ Day, Fathers ‘Day & Environmental Day (video production)
- Inner voices – The Prefects guild organized an online singing competition. Tiana Perera of Year 9 Commerce was placed first and Shannon Perera of year 12 Commerce was placed second. Senior school music teachers judged the event.
- Online quiz – An online quiz was organized by the prefect’s guild to check the awareness of the COVIC 19 Pandemic. Results of the quiz were impressive since more than 90% of our students were fully aware of the pandemic and preventive measures.
- Face mask project – Most of our prefects made face masks by themselves and creative videos were also made during stitching. Over 250 masks were made for the admin and support staff to appreciate their service during the COVIC 19 Pandemic.
- “ Diplomathon 2020”
This is a conference of youth from schools around the world to speak about various topics in international politics, Business Economics etc . 15 took part in the three-day online session in September this year.
